How to install the PHP poll script

Step-by-step PHPPoll installation: upload the folder, set permissions, run the first-start wizard and create your administrator account. No database needed.

Installing PHPPoll takes about five minutes. You only upload files and create an administrator account – there is no database, installer script or configuration file to edit.

Installation steps

  1. Upload the files. Copy the whole PHPPoll folder to your hosting with FTP or your hosting file manager, for example to https://www.example.com/poll/.
  2. Check folder permissions. The folders data/ and uploads/ must be writable by PHP (permissions 755 or 775).
  3. Open the admin panel. Visit https://www.example.com/poll/admin/ in your browser.
  4. Create your account. On the first visit the welcome screen asks for a site name, username, optional admin email and password. Click Create account and start.
  5. Create a poll. You are taken to the dashboard, where templates help you build your first poll. See Create your first poll.

The first-start wizard creates your administrator account.

Account rules

  • The username must be 3–40 characters: letters, numbers and . _ - @.
  • The password must have at least 8 characters.
  • The admin email is optional but needed for vote notifications.

Complete the first-start wizard right after uploading the script. Until the account exists, anyone who opens /admin/ could create it.

After the installation

  • Open Settings to set your site name, logo, language and time zone. See Settings.
  • On nginx or IIS, block web access to the data/ folder. See Security and privacy.
  • If links or embed codes show a wrong address, set the Script URL in Settings → Public site.

Installation problems

If the wizard says settings could not be saved, the data/ folder is not writable. See Troubleshooting for fixes.
