Installing Jobs Portal
Installation takes a few minutes: upload the files, import one SQL file into an empty MySQL database and edit one configuration file.
Before you start
- A hosting account with PHP 7.4+ (8.x recommended), MySQL/MariaDB and Apache with
mod_rewriteenabled. - PHP extensions: PDO MySQL, GD, mbstring, cURL, fileinfo.
- An empty MySQL database with a user that can read and write it. Use the
utf8mb4character set.
Step by step
- Upload the files. Upload the content of the script folder to your web root (or to a sub-folder such as
/jobs) using FTP or your hosting file manager. - Create the database. In phpMyAdmin or your hosting control panel create an empty database and a database user.
- Import the SQL file. Import
database/install.sql. It creates all tables and adds the starter data: settings, pages, languages and the first administrator account. The login details are listed indatabase/INSTALL.txtinside the script package. - Edit
config.php. Set the database access and your domain, as described below. - Set folder permissions. The web server must be able to write to the folders listed below.
- Log in to the admin panel at
/ADMINand follow the first steps checklist.
The config.php file
| Variable | Meaning |
|---|---|
$DOMAIN_NAME | Your domain, with the sub-folder if the script is not in the web root, for example www.yourdomain.com or www.yourdomain.com/jobs. It is used in e-mail links and in the sitemap. |
$DBHost, $DBUser, $DBPass, $DBName | MySQL server, user, password and database name. |
$DBprefix | Table prefix. The supplied SQL file uses jobsportal_. |
$DEBUG_MODE | Keep it false on a live site. Set it to true only while testing: it prints PHP and SQL errors on screen. |
Folders that must be writable
| Folder | Used for |
|---|---|
backups | Database backups created from the admin panel |
categories, locations | Category and location lists saved by the admin panel |
thumbnails, uploaded_images, uploaded_images/ads | Logos, job images, banners and photos |
user_files | Resumes, documents and job PDF files |
user_videos | Video resumes and company videos |
On Linux hosting set these folders to 755 (or 775 if your host requires it). Never use 777 on a production server.
Pretty URLs and .htaccess
The .htaccess file in the script root enables the SEO-friendly URLs. If your host ignores it, make sure AllowOverride is enabled for the site. Pretty URLs are switched on in Admin → Settings.
Upload to a sub-folder first, test everything, then move the site to the web root. Remember to update $DOMAIN_NAME afterwards.
